Our Core Values
Our core values get us up in the morning, determine who we attract and who we hire, and inform all our programming decisions. In addition to our vision to create equity and belonging through the transformative and healing power of home cooking and gardening, our mission to empower Los Angeles residents and our core values infuse everything we do.
-
We believe that food is at the heart of building community and is so much more enjoyable when shared with others. Good food is more than just delicious – it is honest and nourishes our body and mind, improves our quality of life and the lives of the people who grow and produce it, and supports healthy ecosystems.
-
We are all teachers and learners at On-The-Grow. We thrive on creativity and strive for constant improvement, both as an organization and within our programming. We seek new ideas and better ways to solve problems. We listen to our partners and to the community we serve. Our teaching is dynamic, informative and passionate. We craft educational experiences that feed students’ creativity and allow them to personalize their food journey in order to find inspiration for a lifetime of cooking and eating.
-
Health equity is about everyone having the opportunity to reach optimal health. Food is a big part of that. There’s a triple goal for society when it comes to health: planet health, community health and individual health. We are committed to the idea that we must move beyond equality and equity toward liberation (when every person will be able to fulfill their human potential). We recognize each other’s humanity.
-
We are problem-solvers, trailblazers, and pathfinders. We are self-starters with no time for complacency. We tackle problems with enthusiasm until they are solved. Our fearlessness, personal integrity, and sense of adventure drive our work to be the best it can be. We hold each other accountable and live by the motto, "find a way or make one.”
Our Roots
Dená Brummer - Founder
Dená Brummer (pronounced Danae) - cook, teacher and writer – epitomizes the modern chef.
What ties these roles together, besides an immersion in the world of food, is her unyielding desire to educate and empower her community through health-focused cuisine. Much of her work is centered around the simple idea that our food system should protect the environment and biodiversity, promote health and wellness and provide quality jobs with dignity.
She learned how to cook at the Institute of Culinary Education, the University of Gastronomic Sciences and The Gourmandise School. She fine tuned her visual storytelling skills at Sage Plant Based Bistro & Brewery as their Creative Director and learned the hard knocks of getting a food product on the shelves of grocery stores at Semolina Artisanal Pasta. Outside of the kitchen, she works as an Adjunct Professor with the University of Southern California and is an Agroecology/Food Systems Instructor with Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture.
But mostly, she loves to travel, hang out with her teenage daughter, sleep under the stars, read, write and listen to good music.
